During the ground assault, 2nd Brigade was attached to the French 6th Light Armored Division,
while the 1sr & 3rd Brigades followed the 24th Mechanized infantry Division; the 82nd was primarily
tasked with clearing and securing rear areas. During the Desert Storm operations, the 82nd was
re-nicknamed the 82nd "truckborne" division by many of its own personnel.
The division was based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina; all units listed below are organic and Fort

No detailed order of battle is available. According to Friedman [Desert Victory: The War for Kuwait],
the division deployed with 5 mechanized and 5 armored battalions, in contrast to the standard configuration
of 6 and 4, respectively, for a mechanized infantry division. I present the short list of the few units
and commanders that I know of, arranged in order of battle where I know it.
The division could not deploy with its normal reserve round-out brigade; the 197th Infantry Brigade is
the school unit from Fort Benning, and was attached for the Gulf deployment.
